I guess before coming here, I had this whole perception that English was kind of an unofficial universal language and I wouldn't have a problem communicating. I'm learning that this is definitely not the case. The people here all speak mostly Catalan. Spanish could be considered their second language.
I have been hard pressed to find people that speak English. It makes shopping for anything really difficult. Especially when you're looking for something in particular. I've been in the process of sorting out Internet so I don't need to keep coming to the University library to use theirs but trying to find someone that speaks enough English to understand what I'm getting into is extremely difficult.
Whenever I'm walking through Vic, I get the impression that everyone knows I'm a foreigner. I feel like they are all staring at me and I don't know if it's the way I'm dressed or the way I look or if they just do that to everyone. Another difference, is in Canada, when I'm walking down the street and make eye contact with a person, one or both of us usually smile or make some form of acknowledgement towards the other. I've attempted to do this with people here and it's like smiling at a wall. They just stare at me when I smile or say Hola! It's a little awkward but I'll manage.
In other news... I think I have found a flat that I can finally move into early next week. It will be really nice not having to live out of suitcases! I think we can meet with the owner of the flat on Monday and he will draw up a contract and then we can move in the day that we sign it. I'm hoping this will be on Tuesday or Wednesday.
I've also decided that I packed way too much. I should've just packed empty suitcases! I could probably fill another suitcase with all the clothes I will buy. This is not a good thing! I've only been shopping in one area of Vic. I can't imagine what Barcelona or some other big cities will be like! I can't wait!
Anyway, off to try and adjust to the time change some more!
Until next time...
P.S. Happy Birthday Bryce and Nana! Hope you have a good party tonight :)
